Antique and Collectable Reproductions

Being an avid historian and a member of our local Historical Society, the collecting of antiques, their restoration and reproduction is a great part of my life. I have been involved in this area for most of my life. Being old enough to be historical myself, that is a long time. If one is involved in the restoration of historical item, one also has to be involved in their reproduction. The reason for this is simple. Many times during the process of restoration, one finds that you simply can't bring about a satisfactory job because of the condition of the item, either in whole or in part. The only way to salvage the item is to reproduce parts that are beyond repair.

The reproduction of either pieces of a historical item or its complete reproduction, isn't for the faint hearted. Many years have been spent developing techniques, learning from other experts and just good old trial and error to acquire the skills necessary. Copying a historical item isn't what we endeavor to do. We try very hard to make the reproduction resemble what that item would actually look like today. Not when it was first made. This is were the real skills come in. It all starts with the base material, wood. We deal almost exclusively in the reproduction and restoration of wood items. We have a very large number of historical properties in our area and having access to and being familiar with the many ongoing restoration projects, gives us access to a large quantity of material. Material that must be replaced for structural reasons is very suitable for our use. To us, wood is a living, breathing entity. Each piece has its own character. Its own uniqueness. By starting with wood that is either the age of the reproduced or restored item or older, we are able to more accurately match the characteristics of the item itself. Sometimes we have to artificially reproduce weathering and wear from usage. There's times when making a reproduction takes much more time to make than the original item ever did.

Matching wood stains, finishes and paints is a whole other matter and in future writings, I'll talk about that. Making wood stains the way they were made 100 years ago isn't easy. Being raised on a farm and watching and helping my father make his own stains has been of great help. You haven't lived until you have spent a day picking black walnuts. You come home with your hand as black as a piece of coal. We picked them not for the nut meat itself, although on a farm, nothing goes to waste, but we primarily picked them to make black walnut stain with. It's real hard these days to find a black walnut tree where I live. Maybe that gives you an idea of some of the problems one faces.

There are some out there who think it is perfectly acceptable to pass off reproductions as authentic items. In our opinion, that is nothing but fraud. Reproductions have their place. For many, the ability to own authentic pieces of history is just out of their financial capabilities. Yet, they enjoy having pieces of history around them. At times, the simple fact that there just aren't many pieces of a certain item available is the problem. Could you imagine where the movie industry would be without reproductions? In our store, we clearly indicate that an item we are selling is either authentic or a reproduction.

Pricing Reproduction Antiques & Similar Items

Over the years, we have noticed that there seems to be some confusion at times when one starts to talk about the pricing of Reproduction Antiques and similar items compared to the genuine article. I thought I might impart some information that might help buyers in this area. Often when one thinks of a Reproduction, they have the mind set of a cheap knock off item and mentally set a price to match. Of course, the quality of the item is the generally the governing factor on pricing, and this is where the problem of purchasing Reproductions online can cause problems. As hard as a seller and producer try’s, it is very difficult to duplicate the hands on experience of seeing and feeling an item that one gets in a B&M store. Because each potential buyer has their own set of criteria for what constitutes a good product there is always the potential for the online buyer to walk away from the sale less than happy. Hopefully this post will help guide the potential buyer in their purchases. Please remember that we deal almost exclusively in Reproductions made from wood. Although many of the things I'll discuss are pretty general, other types of items can have other factors that must be taken into account.

Let me address the "Pricing" factor. Time and Materials plus the Quality (which not only equals to the degree of authenticity of the item but the degree of detail of the item) generally are the biggest factors related to pricing. The higher the quality and detail of the item, the greater the amount of time is involved in the items production. Add to this any factors related to the materials used (such as its cost) and it is easy to see why there can be such a wide range in pricing seen in the area of Reproductions. One other factor that needs to be taken into account here is whether one is reproducing an item to resemble what it originally looked like when it was first made or is the item to look like it should after 50, 75, 100 plus years of use. This also will play a part in pricing. A good quality Reproduction can sometimes cost as much or even more than the genuine article. That being the case, then why do people buy reproductions? The three biggest reasons are that either the item they are seeking is simply unavailable because of scarcity or the cost of the original is way out of their financial reach at the moment and they are willing to settle for a very close duplicate or what they are going to be using the item for doesn't warrant the cost of an original.

Our business is a perfect example of this. Much of our business is of a custom nature. We supply items for Interior Designers & Decorators, Movie & Theater Production Companies and private individuals. When we get an order for items for a movie production company for example, the quality of the items is generally less than it would be for interior designers and decorators or for a private individual. The simple fact is that in the movie company’s perspective, the item isn't going to receive much, if any, scrutiny. In fact, it simply background to them. When they are done with it, they often don't care what really happens to it. Often they don't even save the items. In their situation, visible accuracy is far more important than the items authenticity to detail or its material quality. What we charge them is appropriate to what they want, request and receive. On the other side of the table, are private individuals. They usually want the very best. Not only in materials but in workmanship and accuracy. Again, the price we charge is directly related to their wants, requests and what they receive.

When we produce an item, we basically have four quality levels we work within. A "Basic", an "Average", a "High End" and a "Custom Detailed" levels. It would take too much time and space to go into the details of what each level constitutes. Obviously, a "Basic" level item is going to cost much less than a "Custom Detailed" level item for obvious reasons. The items we place in our online stores are generally on the high "Average" to "High End" levels in most instances and we are still able to price them at what we consider very reasonable prices.

Some recommendations for the Buyer of Reproductions:

When we do a custom project for a customer in our B&M. We spend a great deal of time talking with the customer and in research (where applicable) to make sure that we are both going to be happy with the product that is produced. That can be pretty tough in an online store. Descriptions of the item are important, but it just isn't practicable for us to put in a massive description of an item on every item we list online. As a buyer, you will be much happier if you:

1) Ask the Seller as many questions as you need to so you feel comfortable. Don't hesitate to ask for additional information, pictures and details. No respectable seller is going to refuse any reasonable request. Just don't expect to get answers to their trade secrets. If you are thinking of bidding on an item up for auction, please don't wait until the last day of the auction to ask your questions. Particularly if they are detailed ones. The answers to your questions will be much more detailed and accurate if the seller has a little time to work with.

2) Don't hesitate to inquire about the quality of the item, the materials it's made from, its history (if that's important to you) or shipping concerns if you have them.

3) Before you purchase, do your home work. Just because you see two item that look identical online and one is more expensive than the other, don't automatically assume that the expensive one is over priced. Remember the Quality factor. Ask those questions.

4) If the item you have purchased has a problem of any kind, contact the seller immediately. We haven't stayed in business for almost 30 years by ignoring customer problems and neither has any other reputable business. Any good business knows that if you don't satisfy the customer, you don't have them. On the other side of this however, be realistic and honest. I personally have been in this business so long, that I can smell a scam half a continent away.

5) Finally, even if it isn't one of our items your are looking at and need some background information we may be able to provide, we'll be glad to assist you.

What To Look For When Buying Antique & Vintage Reproductions

The two most stated reasons people purchase Antique and Vintage Reproductions are "Price" and "Availability". The price is cheaper than the authentic item and/or they can't find what they are looking for. I've found it is often a combination of the two. This being the case, many people really don't know what to look for when purchasing Antique and Vintage Reproductions. Being an antique collector helps but that doesn't always cover all the bases.

I guess I should first of all differentiate between a legitimate Reproduction and a one that is designed to be used for fraudulent purposes. Very simply put, a reproduction that is going to be used for fraudulent purposes is going to be too accurate. Too detailed and too perfect. There has always been a bit of a stigma against those that make reproductions because of potential use for illegal purposes. Obviously a reputable company that makes reproductions will first of all clearly indicate that any particular product is a Reproduction. That company however will also take steps to make sure that their creation can in no way be used for illegal purposes.

These steps generally come in one of two categories. First is to build into the item specific variations from an authentic item that would be evident to an expert. The second is to insert into the product some type of specific marking or identification marks that, usually only the producer, would know about. Neither of these steps are difficult to accomplish in themselves. A good Reproduction Artist however will be able to do this without the average, and I emphasize the word "average", consumer even knowing it or finding the variation. So that brings up the question of "What does the average consumer look for when buying reproductions?".

1) Smart consumers will buy from well established reproduction companies that have a reputation for honesty. Not only will you obtain a better product, you will probably pay less for it. Good companies will not try to gouge the customer. They want the repeat business. Scammers couldn't care less if a customer ever comes back.

2) Another step a consumer can take is to do their homework. Find several pictures of what you are looking for and compare them to the Reproduction. The reproduction many be a little bigger or smaller, may have a slightly different shade in the stain, or even have differences in the actual aspects of construction. Remember, a Reproduction is different than a Duplicate. Reproductions are designed to impart the same look, feel and visual affect as the authentic item does. Not be its duplicate. In the same area of homework and if possible, find an original. Physically examine it. How does it feel? What are the characteristics that catch your eye? How does it smell? Use your sight, smell and feel to establish in your own mine some benchmark points. Don't forget that a good reproduction will be difficult to determine except through very close examination. Don't be disturbed however if you can't find any differences. Good Reproduction Artists hide the differences very well. That's another reason to deal with a reputable company or artist.

3) Watch the pricing. Except for situation where very accurate reproduction are produced for very specific purposes, most reproductions will be priced much more reasonably than an authentic item. That doesn’t mean the reproduction will be dirt cheap. An artist is worthy of his work and will charge accordingly. There are rare instances where a reproduction may actually cost more than an original because of rarity of materials or large amounts of labor required to produce the item. These circumstances are generally very rare.

4) Talk to the person or company producing the reproduction. How do you feel about them? Let your gut feelings guide you. If you don’t feel comfortable with them, walk away. There are plenty of others.

5) In most instances the majority of Reproduction Companies don’t negotiate on their pricing unless it is a custom reproduction job. Like any other company, they have costs that must be covered and need to charge accordingly for their product. Remember also that you are buying a piece of art not a can of green beans.

Can you tell the difference between an antique and a reproduction? Does it really even matter?

There’s nothing wrong with good quality reproductions. You just want to make sure that you know that’s what you are getting. Here are some additional tips to help you tell them apart.

Wood is Wood is Wood – or is it?. Many true Antiques are prone to be made different types of wood. Why? It just didn’t make economic sense to use expensive wood where no one would ever see it. That’s why certain aspects of a real antique are often made from a lesser quality of wood. The bottoms of drawers and joints for example. Reproductions on the other hand, tend to be made top-to-bottom from one wood and sometimes can be heavily stained to hide a poor quality wood. Check the underside, if the wood seems the same throughout the piece, it may be new. This generally holds true for larger real antiques. However, smaller antiques that are not complicated may have been made from one single type of wood.

Look For Signs of Wear. Do the signs of wear make sense for the particular item? A good example is on a antique chair you will find increased signs of wear at the end of the arms where the hands would naturally rest. Work items that were designed for daily use may very well show signs of use almost anywhere but the corners and handles will most often show greater usage signs than other areas. If the wear is consistent through the piece, it’s possibly a reproduction that has been distressed to appear old.

Look For Signs of age. Look for signs of cracks caused by shrinkage. They indicate that the wood has expanded and contracted over time. This is normal for an antique. Also look for slight signs of warps and separation at joint locations. Certain joint types are more prone to separation than others. Dovetail joints that are well done, seldom show much separation but “butt joints” often do.

A Note About Dovetailing. Dovetails made by machine are even, small and usually thin. During the 18th and much of the 19th century dovetails were made by hand and were usually much larger than you see in modern pieces and also somewhat uneven.

What About Hand Carvings. If you run your finger along the carving and it’s a true antique, it will feel bumpy or uneven. Hand carving is uneven and asymmetrical. Machine carving is smooth and symmetrical. Better quality and expensive reproductions however may often incorporate real hand carvings into the reproduction. A real artist will often do this.

Don’t Forget About Gluing Joints. The modern glues used today are much different than those used 100 or more years ago. Now it’s not very likely that your going to be able to do a chemical analysis of the type of glue used but there are things to look for. Craftsman of the past often used reinforce glued joints in their creations. These joints would often be reinforced with dowels, mortise and tenon etc. to ensure that they were good and sturdy. Depending on the artist creating the reproduction, better quality reproductions may also show this type of craftsmanship. Poor quality reproductions will often only be glued which down the road will lead to them falling apart.
Look At The Construction Materials. Modern day Phillips screws, staples and particle board are all signs of a reproduction. Unless your dealing with a very exceptional company or artist who has the capability to produce very large width boards (boards in excess of 12 inches in width) or access to old lumber, most reproductions are made from commercially produced stock. One seldom finds anything larger than a 12 inch width on any commercially produced stock these days. On antiques with large surfaces (tables, trunks, armoires), furniture makers used wide boards, often with an uneven width. Reproductions generally use narrow boards with an even width.

Does The Hardware Match? Truly old hardware has a natural patina and it doesn’t have a lacquer finish to protect it from tarnishing either. Plus, it isn’t shiny and new looking. Good reproduction artists are capable of taking a piece of new hardware and making it look really antique. This is another indicator that your dealing with a good company when buying Reproductions.

The Advantage Of Buying Reproductions. Buying good quality reproductions eliminates the frustration of hunting for the right piece. Having something custom made ensures you get exactly what you want. A good example is the narrow dimensions of antique armoires. Generally they are 15 to 17 inches. This doesn’t suit many of today’s pieces of electronic equipment. Some dealers, including ourselves, do offer custom reproductions to overcome this predicament.

What Is Country Rustic & Primitive Décor?

DM Production and Sales
Bringing The Past To The Present Since 1988

What Is Country Rustic & Primitive Décor?

Country Rustic Décor is a popular decorating style these days. Part of the reason is the desire of many people to get back to a more natural life style. The more hectic our lives become, the more we look for ways to relieve the stress we fell. The term “Country Rustic” is a very broad terminology but basically leans towards the concept of the early American country décor of the 1800’s. In reality, it borrows the country style from French, English, Swedish, German and other European countries. Generally defined as simple and charming, coarse and unfinished yet having its own unique and endearing qualities. When one thinks of a home that is decorated in Country Rustic Décor, the usually think of a home that is modest, comfortable and friendly. Rustic country decorating usually includes the use of natural woods, aged surfaces, rough finishes and simple lines. Rustic country decor is about handcrafted objects, simplicity, furnishings that you enjoy and connecting back to nature.

To decorate with Country Rustic Décor basically means using items like antique furniture or reproductions, flea-market pieces, trunks, flower wreaths, quilts, chests, armoires, period appropriate furniture and accessories that basically look 100 plus years old. Everything should look like it is well used and enjoyed. These types of elements will give almost any home the kind of rustic country feel that is simpler, very personal and warmly inviting.

Although some professional decorators may say that there is a specific way to use Country Rustic Décor when decorating, the real truth is that they don’t have to live in your home (at least I hope not) you do. We can and will be making some suggestions in upcoming posts but when all is said and done, you need to use what you like and want, put your items where and when you want, and you need to allow the decorating to be an off shoot of your own personality. Your individual likes and dislikes will be what makes your home – your home!

Tips On Decorating With Country Rustic Pieces

DM Production and Sales

Bringing The Past To The Present Since 1988

Tips On Decorating With Country Rustic Pieces

Country Rustic furniture is commonly made with pine and perhaps painted with hand-painted designs such as flowers, birds, animals, country scenery or leaves. At other times the wood is stained with natural oils and varnishes. When it comes to decorating, use ladder back chairs, benches, rocking chairs, or even wicker furniture. In the kitchen, a large rectangular table made of pine is a good option for your kitchen or dining room table. A little known fact is that until the era of mass production really took hold, the only way one would obtain a complete dinning room set like we are familiar with today, was to have it custom made. Many Country homes often had a miss match set of chairs that sat around the kitchen table.

Have a piece of furniture you want to give a Country Rustic look to? You can give your furniture a rustic look very quickly if you follow these steps. Brush a coat of paint on the furniture piece, then rub most of the paint off. After it dries, apply wood stain unevenly for an older weathered appearance. It will be perfect and rustic looking!

We use a more elaborate technique in our shop but for the average home owner, the above effect looks and feels very realistic. If you want to add an additional touch, take an old sock and put in a cup full of nuts, bolts, screws and washers. Take and give you piece a few hits with the filled sock in different places on the furniture piece. This will add a little more of a well used effect to the piece. Again, in our work shop, we use much more elaborate techniques that the average person isn’t usually willing or able to undertake.
